About

Sheila Berenson is a Brookline-based artist, writer, and educator whose life has been defined by curiosity, resilience, and a love of creative exploration. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, and raised in a hardworking family of educators and professionals, she learned early the value of discipline, education, and the arts. Though her early interests included science and art, Sheila chose education as her path—earning degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Texas–Austin, later teaching across the Midwest and internationally. Her career evolved from teaching children and training future educators to authoring award-winning writing projects and developing innovative literacy tools. Over time, her passion for art and creativity became central to her personal and professional identity. After early retirement, Sheila dedicated herself fully to painting, sculpture, and mixed media—finding in visual art the freedom to express the complexity of emotion, experience, and imagination. Her artwork has appeared in numerous juried exhibitions, earning regional awards for originality and technical mastery. Drawing from her educational background, she views art as a form of inquiry—a way to question, connect, and understand the world. Beyond her creative work, Sheila remains active in Hadassah, local Jewish and environmental initiatives, and community arts organizations. Her interests span from education reform to the intersection of technology and creativity, with an emphasis on empowering young people to think critically and engage meaningfully with the world around them.
