About

Sheila Berenson is a Brookline-based artist, writer, and educator whose life has been defined by curiosity, creativity, and a commitment to meaningful engagement. From a young age, art was central to her identity, though societal expectations led her to pursue teaching as a career. She earned degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Texas–Austin, later teaching English, reading, and social studies across the Midwest and internationally. Throughout her teaching career, Sheila integrated her artistic drive into the classroom through innovative projects, writing, and grant-funded initiatives that enriched learning experiences for her students.

Following early retirement, she devoted herself fully to painting, sculpture, and mixed media, exploring the complexity of emotion and imagination. Her work has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions, earning recognition for both originality and technical mastery. Viewing art as a form of inquiry, Sheila blends her educational background with her creative practice to connect, question, and engage with the world.

Sheila is also active in Hadassah, local Jewish and environmental initiatives, and community arts programs. She is the proud mother of two sons, Joshua, PhD, a professor of psychology, and Nathan, M.Ed., an environmental officer.
